Ruger is Making a Killing

Town of Fairfield, you have a Ruger Problem

The Sturm Ruger & Company on 1 Lacey Place in Southport presumably pays its taxes and perhaps provides some money to Fairfield community organizations. However, it’s a company that sells deadly weapons to a serial human rights violator, one that has equipped forces to use the “Ruger” as a means of crowd control. This has resulted in numerous deaths and serious injuries. This has been brought to the attention of the company, but apparently it doesn’t care.

The serial human rights violator is the State of Israel. The list of Palestinian victims that can be found just by Google searches is a long one. You’ll find the names of youths who are killed or who have lost an eye or who were shot in the knee or the names of men just trying to work in Israel. The IDF uses the Ruger routinely to break up demonstrations, terming them all “riots”. The IDF targets what it calls “inciters” at demonstrations. Most people would call these people “leaders”.

Apparently Rugers have been sold to Israel since the late 1980’s.  In 2005 after a number of Palestinians were killed by bullets from Rugers the Judge Advocate General of Israel ruled that the Ruger should be considered a “live weapon” and not a “non-lethal one”. It’s not clear if this ruling was communicated to the troops. At any rate by 2014 it was obvious to the Israeli human rights group B’tselem that Ruger were freely being used against demonstrations. In one 17-month period Israel spent the equivalent of $400,000 to buy “Ruger bullets”.

In 2018 the Middle East Crisis Committee (CT) wrote several letters to Ruger chief executive Chris Killoy. He was asked to explain how many weapons Ruger was selling Israel and if Ruger paid attention to the deaths and injuries among Palestinians the rifle was inflicting. It was mentioned that the Israeli practice of shooting unarmed leaders of demonstrations seemed to be a violation of the Rome Statue of the International Criminal Court. Killoy was asked, “Have you considered that your weapons may be being used in ‘crimes against humanity’?”

There has never been an answer to any of the letters.

Town of Fairfield you get taxes from this company you have obligation to make sure it isn't "blood money".

We call on the Fairfield Board of Selectmen to:

1. Write to Sturm Ruger and ask them to account for the type and amount of weapons and bullets it has shipped to Israel.

2. Ask the U.S. State Department for a copy of the contracts it has approved for Ruger sales to Israel.

3. Ask what Sturm Ruger does to monitor that its weapons are not used recklessly by Israel.

4. Call for the company to suspend deliveries to Israel and to announce it will no longer sell those weapons or bullets to Israel.

We recommend Sturm Ruger consult with an attorney familiar with international law to see if felony-murder could be charged against officers of a company that knowingly supplied weapons to a notorious human rights violator who used them repeatedly to kill protesters or by-standers.
